How I Went From Salesman to Billion Dollar Business Owner....
Many years ago I was a good real estate salesman. But I wasn’t a good business owner. I am embarrassed to admit it, but I knew nothing about building a business or even balancing a check book.
And yet, I had a business to build. I had bought the franchising rights for Re/Max™ real estate in the state of Indiana, which had never been successful before. In fact, the 2 previous owners failed miserably trying to get it off the ground.
I was 26, naïve and everyone I talked to about my goals and dreams thought I was a crazy young kid with big dreams. They would laugh at me, when I said I was going to build a billion dollar company.
That's because everyone else who had tried to compete against the 'big dogs' in that state had fallen flat on their face.
But, for some reason, I knew in my heart could do it. I wasn’t sure why, but something inside me said I could achieve my goals no matter how big or crazy they were.
So I was determined to turn my business into a runaway success. But I knew I couldn't do it by reinventing the wheel, as it would take forever to get to where I wanted to be.
What did I do instead? I decided to 'clone' the success of two of the most successful Re/Max™ subfranchisors in the world and in the real estate business.
I watched how they thought...spoke....and acted. And then, I started adopting the exact same habits and behaviours.
It seemed odd at first to act in these new ways. It felt weird to try to think as they thought. Sometimes it even seemed like I was “lying” to myself talk about success - when I really hadn’t achieved much in business in the past.
But, that’s what I did – “cloning” the thought, the traits, the strategies and behaviours of these two 'Top Guns' in my field.
Lo and Behold, soon, I started to see results coming through. And it had no sign of stopping. Year after year, my business continued to grow … sales kept rising higher and higher.
